John George Todd III
Pardoned January 6 defendant
Documented editorial-use imageJohn George Todd III is a United States Marine. He served from 2009 to 2013 and deployed to Afghanistan. Semper Fi is not a slogan you retire from. Before January 6 he was a Marine veteran living in Missouri who later relocated to South Carolina. [FACT, Associated Press, Military.com, Marine Corps Times] He raised his right hand, he did the deployment, and he came home to a country that has not always known what to do with the men it sends. That service is documented and it is his. It does not disappear because a case number got attached to his name. THE LEGAL FIGHT A criminal complaint against John George Todd III was filed May 3, 2022 and he was arrested May 10, 2022. [FACT, DOJ] He went to trial rather than plead. He was convicted of six counts, including obstruction of an official proceeding, and on May 31, 2024 he was sentenced to five years in prison. [FACT, AP via WKBN, Military.com, WLTX] The government's account, contained in the statement of facts, describes a struggle over a fiberglass flagpole with a Metropolitan Police Department officer during which the pole splintered and cut the officer's hand. [FACT, DOJ statement of facts] That is the record as the court took it. This archive does not restate it as more than that, and it does not erase it either. THE CLEMENCY On January 20, 2025, a presidential proclamation granted full pardons for offenses related to events at or near the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, covering the convictions in this case. [FACT] John Todd came home. CASE RECORD Case number: 1:22-mj-95 Court: U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Complaint filed: May 3, 2022.
