Robert Morss
January 6 case-file subject
Documented editorial-use imageRobert Morss is a U.S. Army Ranger who deployed to Afghanistan three times, then came home to western Pennsylvania and taught American history to high school students. Ranger scroll. Chalkboard. Same man. WHO HE IS FACT - Morss served with the 2nd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, and completed three combat tours in Afghanistan (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette; Stars and Stripes). FACT - At the time of his arrest he was working as a part-time history teacher in the Shaler Area School District, just north of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (CBS News Pittsburgh; Patch). DOCUMENTED INFERENCE - Two of the hardest volunteer jobs in America are the Ranger Regiment in wartime and a public high school classroom. Robert Morss took both, by his late twenties. Whatever anyone thinks about January 6, that service happened first, and it is real, and no headline erases it. THE LEGAL FIGHT FACT - Morss was arrested June 11, 2021 and ordered held in pretrial detention while his case was pending (Stars and Stripes, December 2021). He spent roughly two years behind bars before he was ever sentenced. FACT - After a stipulated bench trial, he was found guilty on August 23, 2022 of robbery, assaulting or resisting officers with a dangerous weapon, and obstruction of an official proceeding. Remaining counts were dismissed on the government motion. FACT - On May 24, 2023, U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden sentenced him to 66 months in prison, 24 months of supervised release, and $2,000 restitution. FACT - On January 20, 2025, Robert Morss received a full and unconditional presidential pardon for his January 6 conviction. The DOJ Office of the Pardon Attorney lists him among pardon-certificate recipients. He is a pardoned January 6 defendant, and the pardon is the last word the courts will have on this case. Charges are charges. Convictions are convictions. A pardon is a pardon. All three are in this record, and none of them is the whole man.
