The comeback ledger, quarter three

Every quarter I sit down and write a ledger.

Not a vision board. Not a plan. A ledger.

A line only goes on it if the thing actually shipped. A number only goes on it if I can show you where it came from. Everything else is a feeling, and feelings do not belong in a ledger.

This is quarter three.

What the site did

284 published articles. Zero of them missing a share image.

That second number is the one I am proudest of, and it is the one nobody will ever notice. That is usually how it works. The stuff that holds a thing together is invisible right up until it fails.

Now read the August bar carefully.

August is not finished. That 86 is fifteen days, not a month. I am not going to stand it up next to three complete months and let you walk away thinking it is the same kind of number. It is a partial month, and I am telling you that in the same breath I am showing it to you. How I count things is published here.

May 33. June 53. July 112. August 86 in fifteen days.

The jump from June to July is the whole story of this quarter. That was not inspiration. Inspiration does not double anything. That was a system. The morning the publishing pipeline stopped being a decision I made and started being a thing that just ran, the number roughly doubled.

Three categories carry the most weight so far. Reflection at 33. Rebuild at 28. Behind the scenes at 23.

What else shipped

The book. Fighting Shadows is open for pre-order on my own site, not somebody else's storefront. That was on purpose. If a platform can switch off my ability to sell my own book, it was never really my book.

Gideon Commerce. GideonHQ.com is live. Seller first marketplace. Flat one percent platform fee on the paid plans and two percent on the free plan. And the footer still says demo build, because it is one, and I would rather tell you that myself than let you find it out.

RepWatchr. RepWatchr.com is live.

SellerProof. Still in the build column. It does not get a line on this ledger until it does something for somebody who is not me.

What did not

Volume went up. That is on the chart and it is a fact. Volume is not the same thing as reach, and I am not going to pretend it is.

There is no revenue line in this quarter's ledger. Not because there was nothing, but because I will not put a dollar figure in front of you that I cannot hand you a receipt for. The day I can show it, I will show it. Until then the line stays blank. A blank line is honest. A guess is not.

And the demo build label is a line in the not finished column, not the shipped column. I put it in my own footer on purpose. It still belongs there.

The ledger method, written out

Run this yourself. It takes about forty minutes and it will wreck your ability to lie to yourself, which is the entire point.

1. One page. Three columns. Shipped. Not shipped. Learned. If it will not fit on one page, you are writing a story, not a ledger.

2. A line only counts if somebody outside your house could see it. Not planned. Not almost. Not ninety percent. Could a stranger go look at it right now. If no, it goes in the middle column.

3. Every number gets a source sitting next to it. Where it came from and the date you counted it. If you cannot name the source, delete the number. A number with no source is decoration.

4. Mark the partial ones partial. Half a quarter, half a month, half a launch. Label it in the same line where you brag about it. This is the rule that keeps the whole page honest.

5. Write the not shipped column first. Before you get to feel good, write down what you said you would do and did not. Do it first, while you are still willing.

6. One sentence per line. No adjectives. Shipped the pre-order page. Not, launched an incredible new pre-order experience. The adjectives are where people hide.

7. Sign it and date it. Then put it somewhere you will actually read it in ninety days. A ledger you never reopen is a diary.

The hardest rule is number two, and it is the one that makes the whole thing work. Effort does not get a line. Intent does not get a line. Only shipped work gets a line.

Why I do it out loud

Because a quiet ledger becomes a generous one.

When nobody is going to read it, the almosts start creeping into the shipped column. Publishing it takes that option away from me. Every number in this post can be checked. Every link goes somewhere you can click.

That is not bravery. That is just a fence I built around my own optimism.
