The Most Important Page on My Marketplace Is the List of Things You Cannot Sell

Gideon Commerce blocks thirteen categories and takes zero fee on vehicles and real estate. I turned off checkout on the biggest tickets on purpose. Here is why.

Most marketplaces bury the page that tells you what they will not touch.

I put mine in the top navigation.

Go look at it. Gideon Commerce publishes the full restricted list on the Trust Center, right there next to the fee page, and it is not a paragraph of legal fog. It is a list you can read in about fifteen seconds.

What we will not run through checkout

Firearms. Ammunition. Explosives and dangerous weapons. Drugs and controlled substances. Stolen or counterfeit goods. Financial instruments. Live animals. Hazardous chemicals. Surveillance and spyware. Adult sexual products. Alcohol. Tobacco and vapes. Regulated medical devices.

Blocked or routed into a restricted workflow, and listings that mention them get screened automatically. That is published on the Trust Center page, not buried in a terms of service nobody reads.

And here is the part that costs me money

Vehicles are lead only. Real estate is lead only. No on platform checkout on either one.

Think about what that means for a marketplace that makes its money on completed sales.

There is a pickup truck on our own front page listed at $32,900. There is a buildable lot listed at $185,000. Those are exactly the kind of numbers a platform builds its revenue on.

We take zero sale fee on them. Lead only categories pay no sale fee at all.

I turned off the checkout on the biggest tickets on the site on purpose.

Why a man builds a wall around his own revenue

Because I have watched what happens to people when a system moves fast and nobody stops to ask whether it should.

Real estate and vehicles are not just big numbers. They are licensing. They are titles. They are fair housing law. They are the exact places where somebody with no license and a good sales page can do real damage to a family that trusted the platform more than they trusted the seller.

So we do not process real estate closings, commissions, escrow, or licensed brokerage activity. Vehicle listings carry VIN and title fields and a dealer versus private seller flag, and the transaction finishes off platform under the rules that already govern it.

That is a choice. It is not a technical limitation. It would be easier to take the fee.

What is above the line

Anything at or above $5,000 gets flagged for manual review and requires enhanced verification. That is the published high ticket threshold.

Every seller clears identity checks before their first listing goes live. Business sellers, high volume sellers, high ticket listings, real estate and vehicle leads, and liquidation sellers go through enhanced verification on top of that.

And every risky admin action writes an immutable audit log entry. Removing a listing. Suspending a seller. Approving a verification. Flagging a dispute.

That audit log is not a compliance box. That is personal.

I know exactly what it is like to be on the wrong end of a decision nobody wrote down. To be told something happened, and have no way to go back and check who did it, or when, or why.

I am not going to run a platform where a seller gets removed and there is no record of who removed them.

The transferable part

You do not have to be building a marketplace to use this.

Whatever you sell, there is a version of the thing you will not do. Most business owners keep it in their head and it stays fuzzy until the day somebody offers them enough money to forget it.

Write it down. Put it on the site. Put it where a customer can find it before they ask.

Two things happen. You stop having the same awkward conversation over and over. And the customers who show up already agree with you, which is the only kind worth having.

A published limit is not a weakness. It is the fastest trust signal there is, because anybody can claim to be honest and almost nobody will publish what it costs them.
